Fun Fun Fun Fest

Festival Branding

Fun Fun Fun Fest was an annual music and comedy festival held in Austin, Texas. It was known for its diverse lineup, featuring a mix of indie rock, hip-hop, punk rock, electronic, and comedy performances. Unfortunately, the festival came to an end after its 2015 edition, so that is why I wanted to create branding for a potential comeback event under the same name.

Challenge: Develop promotional materials for the potential revival of a cherished festival, incorporating hand-lettering into the design.

Sketches

Initial Thoughts

In my initial sketches I decided to start with the idea of a poster. I wanted something with big energy that filled the space, while also retaining the essence of the original festival.

Digital Drafts

First Round

With these first digital drafts I incorporated color and wanted to utilize bold and funky hues. I used these typefaces as a template for what I eventually wanted to accomplish with handlettering.

Second Round

From my previous iterations I decided to expand on this design as I felt it had a nostalgic playfulness to it that was reminiscent of the late 90’s punk and skate scene, which was a sizeable part of the original Fun Fun Fun Fest demographic. I removed the large lettering featured in each “Fun” and added roughly sketched letters in their place with loose strokes with different weights around each.

Final Design

Reflection

Crafting this project was a delight for me, especially considering Fun Fun Fun Fest held a special place in my heart during its active years. It presented a few first-time experiences, notably the art of formatting and designing text-heavy layouts. Additionally, exploring creative lettering and integrating it into the branding process was a fulfilling learning curve.
